Councillors of the Bamenda City Council have unanimously voted the 2024 Administrative and Management Accounts of the council.
Balance in income and expenditure at 3.5 billion Francs, the councillors meticulously examined the budget and realized that a total of 10 boreholes were constructed around the Municipality, 20km of earth roads have been maintained and 4.5 km of double surface dressing has been done.
While addressing the councillors, the City Mayor of Bamenda, Achobong Paul highlighted that the City council had made routes to some places hitherto very difficult for council workers to penetrate in Bamenda II subdivision.
Some of the areas around the Mankon Fon's palace have seen their roads graded and widened. The City Mayor applauded the councillors for working tirelessly to ensure that the project is complete.
"We have done quite much in areas where we could not easily have access over the last few years. We want to thank the quarter heads for their dedication and efforts to assure us that we can get in and do the work which we have done. This collaboration between the quarter heads and the Bamenda City Council is very important and works for the development of the Municipality." Mayor Paul Achobong said.
Still in collaboration with the quarter heads, the city council launched a garbage free Bamenda where waste sorting will be done at home before the trucks collect the garbage. The City Mayor said "heaps of garbage are no longer seen around the streets of Bamenda. We have done a remarkable job in this area. We had a meeting with quarters heads, their secretary Generals and the concerned population. I can assure you that after this was done, the disposal of garbage on our streets has become a thing of the past." The City Mayor said.
Councillors also proposed that bottles of imported drinks is now a nightmare to City dwellers and proposed that the bottles are crushed and recycled. A suggestion the City Mayor said will be looked into.
Speaking at the session, the Senior Divisional officer for Mezam, Simon Emile Mooh frowned at the level of disorder recorded in Bamenda. Illegal motor parks around the city centre, disturbing the circulation of persons and their goods. The SDO called on the security officers to tackle this once and for all.
Simon Emile Mooh also announced to the councillors that a crackdown on illegal churches operating within Mezam will soon start. He said the Grace period for these churches to operate has passed, citing examples of some of the churches as sponsors of terrorism in the Division.
The rehabilitation of some street lights, the construction of a footpath at the station cliff and the acquisition of a sewage truck (ongoing) are some of the projects realized in 2024.
