Opinion: Why President Paul Biya Should Launch His Campaign in Bamenda

President Paul Biya, Chairman of the CPDM

Militants and sympathisers of the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement on March 24th made a clarion call for President Paul Biya to launch his campaigns in Bamenda. The party advanced reasons such as Bamenda being the birthplace of the CPDM.

While several other localities in Cameroon are calling for President Paul Biya to launch his campaigns there, it is traditionally known that the president of the Republic and Chairman of the CPDM regularly campaigns in the Far North and Littoral regions.

This time, the bigwigs of the party and the militants in North West, are requesting the Head of the state to start in Bamenda, his second home.

North West Elite calling on President Biya to launch campaigns in Bamenda

Bamenda has played an instrumental role in the politics and policies of the new deal government, one which President Biya underscores has made Bamenda his second home.

By and large, should President Biya decide to heed to the people's call of the North West, it will mean that the President will be stepping his feet into the region for the first time in 15 years, where the historic meeting between the head of state and Ni John Fru Ndi took place.

It will also mean the President of Republic will be coming to Bamenda for the first time since the armed secessionist conflict started. Paul Biya known as a man with magic words, who pronounced the University of Bamenda in December 2010 and it saw the light of day, it is believed, his coming to Bamenda- Bamenda which has had its own fair share of the conflict, can arrest the smoking guns once and for all.

It is known in Cameroon that where the President passes, development follows. In 2010, Bamenda was a beautiful city, with overflowing street lights and beautiful roads. The roads had long dilapidated beyond recognition and Bamenda, once the cleanest town in Cameroon is now engulfed in dust. Words of the imminent start of the works on the Bamenda urban bypass has become a lullaby on the ears of the population. The coming of the Head of State can accelerate the start of works in Bamenda.

Moreso, the Bamenda referral hospital that has been abandoned for more than five years now, might see works recommence on the site to address the unending health challenges in the region.

Launching his campaigns in Bamenda can just be the perfect opportunity for President Biya to inaugurate the customs clearing house in Bamenda and the Bamenda dry port and industrial zone which is being setup. It can also be a perfect opportunity for the head of state to see how the peace and development initiative of the North West Regional Assembly is being implemented to actively empower youths through sustainable income and skilled acquisition.

The Observer thinks and rightfully so that for the political and economic growth of the North West Region, it is imperative that the President launches campaigns in Bamenda where his supporters have been steadfast despite the numerous challenges that have and continue to befall them.

The militants and sympathisers of the CPDM were brutally killed, Businesses and houses razed between 1990 and 1992. A similar situation when the armed conflict started in 2016.

To comfort and give hope, it will only be fair that President Biya reassures his North West following.

It will also be a moment for the President to celebrate some iconic figures he had worked with and those he is currently working with like Minister Paul Atanga Nji, Felix Mbayu, Mbah Acha Rose and Fuh Calistus Gentry in shaping Cameroon's future, ensuring prosperity and economic growth.

The Cameroon People's Democratic Movement has gone through a rough part in the North West Region. From 1990 when multiparty politics was reintroduced in Cameroon, the fortunes of the party dwindled across the region but in 2020, the party won 33 of the 34 council seats, 18 of the 20 national Assembly seats and 90/90 Regional Assembly members. The party has 9/10 senators in the region. The renewed fortune of the CPDM is anchored on peace and development.

President Paul Biya, the people of your second home are calling you to the birth place of the CPDM, Sir, Answer their call.
