North West Youths Denounce Attacks on Minister of Youth Affairs, Call for Repatriation of Perpetrators

Youths of the North West Region under the banner of the Cameroon National Youth Council have strongly condemned the voilent attacks on the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education and the Cameroonian Ambassador to Belgium on the 28th February and 3rd of May 2025.

In a march on the streets of Bamenda from the Customs junction to the North West Governor's office, they chanted no to babarism, brandishing several placards.

Speaking to the Secretary General of the North West Governor's office, the President of the National Youth Council for the Region, Mekom Samauel Taleh, regretted the unfortunate attack and stated that;

"North West youths are peaceful.  We don't want any act of vandalism against our people. Last month, some youths came out and attacked the Minister of Youth Affairs and the President of the Cameroon National Youth Council. We are here to state it clearly that we are not in support of those youths. You can see them here."




While brandishing a banner of some 21 persons believed to be perpetrators of the act under the banner of Bridgade Anti-Sardinands (BAS), Mekom Samuel called on the Belgian government to repatriate them to come to Cameroon to undergo the Moral Civic Rearmament programme, REAMORCE of the Ministry of Youth Affairs.

"This will make them to understand that they're ways of solving problems without being violent. We are passing this message through you to the Belgian Ambassador to Cameroon so that they can be sent back here for moral rearmament."

Note should be taken that of the 21 suspected faces, non is from the North West Region. Mekom Samuel used the occasion to tell the governor that the North West Youth is peaceful, understanding, and development oriented.

"So we want the world to know that we completely distance ourselves from all what took place in Belgium." Mekom said.




Some of the banners read "Boyo, All we want is a peaceful environment to contribute to the growth of our nation Cameroon. Donga Mantung, All youths must be players in the building of an emergent Cameroon and should stay clear of hatespeech, violence and moral decadence. Ngoketunjia Give a red card to anything that hinders our country's stability and Economic Growth." Are some of the messages the youths paraded with.


Responding to the grievances of the Youth, Saidouna Moussa, Secretary General at the North West Governor's office said by this act, "it proves that that youths of the North West Region are republican. It proves that they want peace and development which is the main mission and vision of the government of Cameroon. The Governor encourages you to continue in this way so as to foster peace and progress of the region. We have heard you and we will convey your request to our hierarchy.' Saidouna Moussa said.

Mounouna Foutsou, the Cameroonian Minister of Youth and Civic Education, and Daniel Evina Abe’e, the Cameroonian ambassador to Belgium, were assaulted by members of the Brigade Anti-Sardinards (BAS).

The incident, which took place during the closing ceremony of the Youth Month on February 28 and March 3, 2025, has sparked outrage among Cameroonian authorities and led to an official diplomatic protest.

The Cameroonian government has strongly condemned the attack. On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, the Minister of External Relations Lejeune Mbella Mbella summoned the Belgian Ambassador to Cameroon, Alain Leroy to express the nation’s deep indignation over the incident. During the meeting, Cameroon reiterated its concerns about security threats faced by its officials in Belgium and demanded swift action from the Belgian authorities.

In an official statement, the Cameroonian government stressed that such acts of aggression are incompatible with the historically cordial relations between the two nations. Officials emphasized the need for peaceful dialogue, mutual respect, and the importance of upholding diplomatic security agreements.
