The Mayor of Bamenda I Council, Mbigha Njah Felix has been recognized for enhancing sustainable development and Good Governance.
The award was conferred on the council on Sunday 2nd February 2025 as the World celebrated the International Wetlands Day.
While handing the award, the President of the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network and CEO of World Echoes Media Group, Tamukong Roland explained that the Bamenda I Municipality is facing serious issues of climate change as water friendly trees have all been cut off and replaced by skyrocketing building. This, he says has greatly affected the people living down stream. A worry which the Mayor together with some climate foundations like the Farmer Tantoh Foundation have been working exceedingly hard to ensure that the trees are replaced and water catchments protected.
On his part, Mayor Mbigha Felix appreciated the Cameroon Climate Journalism Network for the recognition and said "the council is doing everything possible to protect water catchment areas across the Municipality. We know the pain that adverse weather conditions is having on our population and we will not relent on creating more green spaces.
"I will like to thank the Fon of Bamendakwe who has been so supportive in ensuring that trees are planted and closely followed. He has such a passion for this activity that it is becoming a norm for every household." Mayor Mbigha said.
Adopted in 1971, the 2025 edition of World Wetlands Day was celebrated under the theme; "Protecting Wetlands for our common future."
Before the handing of the awards to the various recipients, actors in the fight against climate change and actors in the preservation of wetlands took turns to explain how they're combating the ills in the North West Region of Cameroon amongst others.
The award to Mayor Mbigha adds to several others given to appreciate the change he has brought to the Municipality.
