Hon Agho Oliver Inspires Youth Parliamentarians, mentors future leaders

Hon Agho Oliver with Youth MPs

Hon. Agho Olivier Bamenju, Member of Parliament for Mezam North in the North West Region, has been reaffirming his commitment to youth empowerment. He made this clearer during the last National Youth Day celebration in Yaounde on February 11, 2026, during his meeting with youth parliamentarians. He met with Youth Parliamentarians at the Hôtel des Députés in Yaoundé on the sidelines of the celebrations of the 59th National Youth Day in Cameroon.

As one of the youngest MPs in the Cameroon National Assembly, Hon. Agho has been a passionate advocate for youth inclusion in politics. His mentorship and engagement with young leaders align with his vision of increasing youth representation in the country's legislative process.

Since 2020, Hon. Agho has actively supported the government's initiative of organizing annual Youth Parliamentary sessions. These sessions provide young Cameroonians with firsthand experience in legislative affairs. This year's engagement brought together youth from diverse geopolitical regions, highlighting the importance of national unity and active civic participation.

During his keynote address, Hon. Agho reminded the young parliamentarians of their vital role in shaping Cameroon's future. "You occupy a greater percentage of Cameroon's demographic," he stated. He challenged them to take an active role in the country's democratic process by registering and voting in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that civic engagement is a fundamental pillar of responsible citizenship.

The Youth Parliamentarians expressed their gratitude to Hon. Agho for his unwavering support and encouragement. They acknowledged his consistent efforts in mentoring them and providing opportunities for them to engage in national governance discussions.

Hon. Agho's continued commitment to youth empowerment reflects his vision of a more inclusive and dynamic parliament. He aims to create a platform where young voices contribute meaningfully to national development. One area he wishes to join youths in lobbying government is the domain of inclusive digital ID and Digital Public Infrastructure, DPI, which aligns with the World Bank's vision of Identification for Development, ID4D, by 2030.

Junior parliamentarians play a vital role in representing the interests and concerns of young people in the legislative process. Their key functions include:

- Representing Youth Perspectives: Providing a voice for young people in the legislative process, ensuring their concerns and interests are taken into account.

- Advocating for Youth Issues: Advocating for policies and programs that benefit young people, such as education, employment, and healthcare initiatives.

- Engaging in Policy Debates: Participating in debates and discussions on policy issues affecting young people, providing valuable insights and perspectives.

- Building Bridges between Youth and Government: Serving as a link between young people and the government, facilitating communication and collaboration.

- Developing Leadership Skills: Participating in junior parliament programs provides young people with valuable experience and training in leadership, public speaking, and policy-making.
