The City Mayor of Bamenda, Paul Achobong has officially launched the 2025 clean city and quarter contest in Bamenda II Subdivision.
The City Mayor launched the activities in Bamenda Wednesday 19th February 2025 at the Council Library. Speaking as he assembled quarter heads from the four villages that make up Bamenda II which includes Mankon, Mbatu, Chomba and Nsongwa, the City Mayor told quarter heads that garbage disposal on the streets and streams of Bamenda has come to an end.
"Pouring of garbage in the streams must end within this subdivision. We must consider the people who live down stream." The City Mayor said.
He went further to outline the dangers of emptying thrash cans into the gutters; "dirt blocks waterways leading to overflow of runoff on the roads and consequently degradation and flooding. Anyone throwing dirt in a river is poisoning those living downstream. Water and streams are not conveyors of dirt." Paul Achobong remarked.
Waterways are generally blocked in the dry season with plastic bottles and dirt. When the rains come calling, they're floods in several parts of Bamenda.
To help curb this, the City Mayor has put at the disposal of every quarterhead, wheel barrows and cleaning equipment. Thrash cans for waste sorting were also donated.
To the City Mayor, the waste will be recycled while the biodegradable waste will be taken to the farms. A van will pass by the quarters to collect the waste.
To ensure that the cleaning is effective, the contest will be reviewed every two months. The best quarter will receive an envelope of One million francs, the first runners up will receive 750,000 Francs and the second runners up will receive an envelope of 500,000 Francs while the others will receive consolatory prizes.
Speaking to the quarter heads, His Royal Majesty the Fon of Mankon, Fo Angwafo IV lamented that Bamenda used to be the cleanest city in Cameroon but today it is lamentable that the city is the way it is.
It was collectively agreed that defaulters of the aforementioned rules will pay a fine of 15,000 Frs.
Bamenda will host the rest of the country at the 2025 world Habitat Day.
