A devastating attack by separatist fighters in Bamenda has claimed the life of 35-year-old Ndzikem Carine. The incident occurred on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at around 3 pm, when fighters opened fire near PMI Nkwen, striking Carine with a fatal bullet.
The attack sent shockwaves through the community, with seven others sustaining injuries, four of whom are in critical condition. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, particularly given the blatant disregard for International Humanitarian Law.
According to Article 58 of the Additional Protocol, parties to a conflict must distinguish between military targets and civilians, directing attacks only against military targets. Furthermore, Article 57 emphasizes the need for feasible precautions to avoid or minimize harm to civilians and civilian objects.
The separatist fighters' decision to open fire in a crowded area like Amour Mezam, where students were leaving school and traffic was heavy, is particularly reprehensible. Ndzikem Carine, a native of Kikiakelaki in the Bui Division of the North West Region, was an innocent victim of this senseless violence. Her remains have been deposited at the Bamenda Regional Hospital Mortuary.
