A military crackdown on a notorious drug camp in Old Town, Bamenda, has left two people feared death, one injured and about ten arrested. The operation, which took place on the night of January 6, 2025, also resulted in a break-in at a nearby private radio station, Vision FM.
According to eyewitnesses, gunshots were heard in the area between 9:30 pm and 11 pm, and three victims, believed to be consumers and dealers of illicit substances, were found in the aftermath. One of the victim is currently hospitalized, while two others are confirmed dead according to our sources.
Akum Emmanuel, proprietor of Vision FM, reported that his radio station was broken into during the night, resulting in the loss of several valuable items, including a laptop, bag, and radio receiver. However, it is unclear whether the military or unknown individuals were responsible for the break-in.
The Old Town neighborhood in Bamenda 2 subdivision has long been plagued by the presence of drug camps, which have had a devastating impact on the local youth.
The incident has sparked hushed calls from residents for illicit drug dealers to vacate the area. However, many are reluctant to openly protest against the drug lords, fearing potential reprisals from those who benefit from the illicit trade.
