Fire Engulfs Two Shops in Bamenda, Three Others Affected

The affected shops

A devastating fire incident occurred at the Bamenda Commercial Avenue in the evening of Wednesday 8th January 2024, destroying the contents of two clothing shops. The blaze began shortly after business hours, with onlookers reporting sparks emanating from a nearby meter.

As traders were not present to respond promptly, the fire quickly spread, ravaging the two shops. Although some items were salvaged, three adjacent shops, including one selling electronic appliances and phones, were also affected. Fortunately, their contents were largely saved thanks to the swift intervention of bystanders, who used water and sand to contain the fire.

One of the victims expressed frustration in an interview with The Observer, revealing that attempts to contact the Army Rescue Unit were unsuccessful due to their vehicles being unusable.

The incident marks the fourth significant fire outbreak in Bamenda's central business district since the inferno at the main market on February 22, 2024. The cumulative damage from this incident is estimated to be in range of millions of Francs CFA.

The shops are located opposite the North West Cooperative Association (NWCA) Building.
