Mayor Denis Awoh Ndang in an exclusive interview with The Observer, explained that his council has carried out a good number of activities to make life more comfortable for persons living with disabilities.

"We have supported the people living with disabilities starting with the provision of some equipment to aid their movement, white canes for the visually impaired, and we include them in every activity of the council including the Fundong Economic Days, they equally had their stands. Even when we organise sporting activities, the persons living with disability always compete in their own disciplines." Mayor Denis Awoh Ndang said.

The Mayor also stated that nothing has been done to the persons of disabilities without their consent.

"The 500,000 Francs we have won today will not be used without seeking their approval of what they want. That is how we have been functioning." Mayor Ndang said.

The council has carried significant improvements in infrastructural development with the construction of ramps to aid the movement of persons with physical disability around the council and other public structures constructed by the Fundong Municipal Council.

Quizzed if the award will change the status quo in the UCCC North West where he is President, Mayor Awoh Ndang responded that the councils have been promoting disability inclusiveness although the extent differ. He encouraged his colleagues, Mayors, to factor inclusiveness in the construction of modern council infrastructure and adapt existing structures because as he says "we all are disabled in one way or the other."

The Municipality of Fundong was described as a leading example by the President of the North West Regional Assembly, Prof Fru Angwafo III who encouraged other Mayors to replicate the example.

The President remarked that the slogan of the region of "U na Mi, Mi na U and Wi bi Wi" must not just be heard but be seen as done. One that brings together all and sundry for community development.
