Installation of Neighbourhood and village committees

The Bamenda I subdivision has 10 village and neighbourhood committees and they're tasked with the mobilization of the inhabitants to participate in their development, contribute to the development, monitoring and evaluation of local planning documents, encourage the population to express their needs and get involved in the monitoring and basic management of basic community facilities and also support the communication and dissemination of Municipal messages, acts and documents to the local population amongst others.

Village committee members taking note

As explained by Mayor Mbigha Felix, these committees will select projects, prioritize them and hand it to the council for execution.

"This is the real meaning of Decentralisation. The community is taking ownership of its projects and the council will be executing what the community really needs. Previously, we used to select these projects with the Quarter heads but now, the community deliberates and decides." Mayor Mbigha Felix said.

Quarter heads are not allowed to be members of these committees but are permitted to take part in deliberations and project proposals.

Ngeh Kelly, PRO of IVFCAM

To educate the members of the village and neighbourhood committees of their roles and responsibilities, Ngeh Kelly of the Interfaith Vision Foundation Cameroon, explained that "the communities must take charge of their development."

Kelly further expounds that if a project not earmarked for a execution becomes a necessity and the population wants to execute it, they should consult the technical services of the council to make the projects durable.

IVFCAM seeks to "Promote participatory development". We want to breach the gap that exists between the council and its users." Ngeh Kelly, PRO of IVFCAM said.

Interfaith Vision Foundation Cameroon will also carryout the follow-up to see into that the committees are working according to the guidelines prescribed and the councils are also complying.

Mayor Mbigha Felix took advantage of the installation to present the key projects the council will be executing in 2025.

The council envisages to buy a dump truck to add to a front end loader and a grader previously acquired.

The village and neighbourhood committees have a mandate of two years renewable.
