Bamenda City Council Mayor, Paul Achombang, has hailed Cameroon's First Lady, Chantal Biya, at the lighting of the Christmas tree ceremony held at Ecole Des Champion in Upstation, Bamenda. The event, which took place on December 12, 2024, under the auspices of Governor Aldolf Lele Lafrique, Governor of the North West Region, marked a significant moment of joy and giving.
Ecole Des Champion, an inclusive primary institution founded by the Chantal Biya Foundation in September 2010, provides education to pupils with and without special needs. The First Lady's generosity was evident as she offered Christmas gifts to the pupils and individuals with special abilities, spreading cheer and warmth.
Mayor Achombang expressed his deepest gratitude to the First Lady for her contributions to Bamenda, particularly through the establishment of Ecole Des Champions. He noted that the institution has made significant strides in promoting education, one of the Sustainable Development Goals. Achombang appealed to the First Lady to continue her efforts, despite the region's challenges, to groom the youth who will become tomorrow's leaders.
The head teacher of the institution, Ngwanue Vincent, also commended the First Lady's benevolence, acknowledging the renovations, computer center, and infirmary established at the institution. However, he made a heartfelt appeal to the First Lady to provide a steady sports instructor to enhance the school's facilities.
Mayor Achombang's words of appreciation were echoed by the pupils and staff of Ecole Des Champion, who were visibly delighted by the First Lady's presence and generosity. The event served as a reminder of the importance of kindness, compassion and community spirit during the festive season.
Rose Jaji Mbah, Coordinator of the First Lady's activities in the Ministry of Basic Education, oversaw the event and the distribution of the Christmas gifts to the vulnerable children. The gifts, including didactic materials, snacks, and toys, aimed to bring joy and support to the children who spanned from orphans, internally displaced persons, and children with physical challenges.
"The first lady of Cameroon, the mother of the nation, and the president of the republic, have come to celebrate the Christmas season with children from underprivileged communities from all over the northwest. This is their second home and they want to tell the population of the northwest that in spite of anything that is happening, they are with them through time and will always be with them. They are part and parcel of this community. It's like a peacemaking trip to console all that has been happening, consoling the population of the northwest and saying we are together. That is the main message. They will continue to do what they can to make sure that the northwest stands out. This champion school in the northwest is the best amongst all, and the multimedia facilities here are second to none in the country.
They are promising to do more and more in spite of the small misunderstanding they can never throw them. Everybody, whether annoyed because of whichever reason, peace is the key, and everything will continue. They are still together with us, they have not abandoned us, they have not forgotten us, and they will continue to be with us" Jaji told the Observer.
The lighting of the Christmas tree symbolized the First Lady's motherly care, as she shared joy and kindness with her "children". This act of generosity has brought hope and happiness to the pupils, fostering a sense of unity and gratitude.
