The Mayor of Bamenda I council, Mbigha Njah Felix has commented the participatory approach to development of the inhabitants of the council area.
The Mayor was speaking during the Budget Orientation Debate of the Bamenda I Council which provided room for the total evaluation of projects carried out in 2024 and the outlining of projects to be carried out in 2025.
The elaborate plan of the council focuses mainly on the opening of roads across the Municipality.
Quizzed about this, the Mayor was proud to announce that quarters and communities have been making significant use of the heavy duty Equipment acquired since he became Mayor in 2020.
"Over the last two years, we have acquired a Grader and Front-end loader. I must tell you that these heavy duty equipment have been solicited for, by some communities and I must confess, they came back more happy and marveled by the works realized. We are calling on other communities to do same." Mayor Mbigha said.
The council also envisages adding a dump truck to the heavy duty equipment pool in 2025.
On the aspect of opening roads, the Municipality was generally slippery in the raining season, making the circulation of both bikes and car very difficult. To this end, Mayor Mbigha says the "council will currently speaking with BUNS to supply the council with old tar that will be removed from streets across Bamenda. This will be compacted on the very slippery spots. Meanwhile laterite will also be used on steepy slopes in the Municipality." Mayor Mbigha said.
As concerns projects for execution, quarters and neighbourhood committees together with their quarter heads and councillors, made proposals.
Some quarters like Abangoh cried aloud that they're not listed in the projects of the council for 2025 and no substantial work was done there in 2024.
The Mayor took out time to explain that Major projects will be carried out in Abangoh under the French Debt Relief Fund (C2D) and the Bamenda City council. The Mayor explained that the subdivisional councils and the City council are working in tandem and once one budgets for a project, the other cannot budget again.
The Mayor however called on the population of Abangoh to submit other mature projects for execution.
Proposals on the better protection of the Youth Empowerment centre, the creation of more leisure activities, the acquisition of more council lands, the utilisation of the Women Empowerment centre were arrived at as resolutions of the Budget Orientation Debate which was facilitated by Interfaith Vision Foundation Cameroon.
The proposals and project priorities of the council will be debated in a budget session that will take place soon.
