The General Manager of the North West Development Authority has applauded the staff for an excellent performance in 2024.
In his traditional annual press conference, Cletus Anye Matoyah was very satisfied with the level of implementation of the Emergency Project to Combat Food Crisis in Cameroon (PULCCA) for which MIDENO is an implementing partner in the North West.
Funded by the World Bank for the tune of 4.9 billion, some 10,700 vulnerable farmers are expected to benefit from improved seeds like Cassava, potatoe, Maize, plantains and vegetable crops.
Still under the PULCCA project, MIDENO is expected to strengthen the capacities of at least 8000 beneficiaries on climate smart agric techniques in order to strengthen their resilience on climate change.
To effectively realize the improved seed distribution, MIDENO is currently carrying out potatoe seed multiplication on some 2.5 hectares of land in Santa and Maize multiplication on some 10 hectares in Menchum.
Quizzed why despite the inputs, prices of foodstuffs continue to surge, the General Manager of MIDENO, Cletus Anye Matoyah responded that this is largely because of the increment in the prices of fuel as well as road blockages that prohibits people from going to their farms. He however concludes that if MIDENO were not playing its role, there would have been general hunger in the region.
The Technical Director of the Authority, Ndeh Emmanuel, recounted a list of outstanding performances of MIDENO in 2024.
One to construct an equipment pool for the structure in Nkwen to ease the opening of roads, construction of bridges and the building of culverts.
The Authority also constructed a Kola Coffee shop (the leading coffee produced and marketed by the North West Cooperative Association, NWCA) within the premises of MIDENO to encourage the local population to consume home grown Kola Coffee. MIDENO also carried out the installation of an irrigation scheme in Nkwen for the multiplication of plantains
To ease the movement of persons and their goods, MIDENO in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works will be initiating the third phase of the construction of the 41.7km road linking Mile 11 Santa through Awing to Galim.
The second phase currently stands at 95% and MIDENO is spending 287 of the 653 million earmarked for the entire road.
This will greatly ease the traffic on the Bamenda-Babadjou road and will be considered as the second entrance into Bamenda.
The North West Development Authority, MIDENO has partnered with the Nkambe council to reduce pollution, increase sensitization of the population on household management and the eventual transformation of household waste. This after the council emerged first in the Regional Clean City contest.
According to Cletus Anye Matoyah, other councils are eagerly waiting for MIDENO to partner with them. Such a partnership can only be possible after the pilot phase in Nkambe.
On staff management, the director of administration and finance, Bawe Ernest Ndi, said enormous work has been done to clear the outstanding arrears at CNPS and those who retire from the authority can actively receive their pensions without delay.
MIDENO has also acquired tractors for mechanized agriculture and also seeks to refurbish its current head office at Veterinary junction in Bamenda.
The North West Development Authority is poised like never before to eradicate hunger in the North West Region in the agricultural and Livestock areas. Cletus Anye Matoyah concluded his assessment of 2024 with the announcement that the second phase of LIFIDEP (Livestock and Fisheries Development Project) will be launched soon.
