The Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians SOGOC Cameroon launch the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign aimed at eliminating violence against women and girls.
This initiative underscores the urgent need for collective voices and actions to combat this worrisome issue.
The event that kicked off with a walk around the Bastos neighborhood grouped members of the Sogoc Media and Acac Network.
The objective is to shade light on the forms of violence, how to react and what to do as a victim, survivor or witness. Sogoc and the Media representatives express their commitment to ending gender-based violence.
During the launch chaired by Sogoc Assistant Secretary Dr Ngassam Anny, she emphasized that gender-based violence is not merely a statistic; it is a harsh reality for countless individuals worldwide. This violence takes various forms—physical, emotional, and sexual—and disproportionately affects women and girls, often leaving deep and lasting scars.
SOGOC representative stressed the importance of access to safe abortion services as a fundamental aspect of women's rights and health. She pointed out that the difficulty of accessing safe abortion services is itself a form of violence that perpetuates cycles of trauma, poverty, and inequality. "When women are denied control over their own bodies, they are subjected to further systemic and personal violence".
Throughout the 16 days of activism, the focus will not only be on raising awareness but also on taking tangible action. Advocates will push for policy changes to improve women's access to safe abortion services and support survivors of gender-based violence in accessing the necessary care, including reproductive health services.
Sogoc is calling on governments, communities, and individuals to join this essential fight against GBv.
As the campaign unfolds, participants are reminded that their collective voices hold immense power.
Together, we can work towards a future where gender-based violence is eradicated, and every individual is afforded dignity and respect.
