A total sum of 75.1 million raised by North West Elites and their friends have been effectively delivered to the 439 victims of the Bamenda Main Market fire disaster of February 22nd 2024.
A statement released by the Archbishop of Bamenda, Andrew Nkea and made public by the one of the front liners, Felix Mbayu, all the victims had effectively received the sum of 171,225 Frs CFA from OPSECS Ltd Bank commercial Avenue.
The commission that was installed in Bamenda on the 7th June 2024 to effectively supervise the handing of the cash to the victims was made up of the Archbishop of Bamenda, The Executive President of the CBC, A representative of the Moderator of the PCC, the President of the Traders Association, the Imam of the Central Mosque, a representative of the Governor's office and the City Mayor of Bamenda.
For four months, the job of actually getting the assistance to the beneficiaries has been concluded with humility from the members of the committee as expressed by Archbishop Andrew Nkea.
As it was said in Bamenda by the Director General of Customs, Fongod Edwin Nuvaga, "the money will be distributed equally to all the victims." And it was equally distributed no matter the loss.
The Bamenda main Market which was described by Minister Felix Mbayu as not just another market, that caught fire on the 22nd February 2024 at about 7PM with 292 shops burnt, the response from loud and clear all over Cameroon culminating with a relief package to some 439 victims as confirmed by the SDO of Mezam, Simon Emile Mooh.
An evaluation of the level of damage done was conducted by the SDO of Mezam with significant material and financial losses recorded.
Songs of joy and appreciation were showered on the Elite of the North West for the gesture in June 2024 by traders of the region.
