The women of Cameroonian civil society are hosting the 2nd Convergence of Women in Cameroon on Climate Change, under the patronage of H.E. Hele Piere, the Minister of Environment, Nature Protection, and Sustainable Development. This significant event will take place from 29th to 31st October 2024, in Mbalmayo, focusing on the theme "Effectiveness and Efficiency of Climate Change Mitigation Strategies at National and International Levels."
As the impacts of climate change intensify, they disproportionately affect women, who are often more vulnerable due to their economic and social roles. However, women are also vital agents of climate action, capable of driving initiatives both locally and in leadership positions.
The spokesperson of the Coalition of Women for Climate Change (COFECCC) Ndongo Zinga Lisette, emphasized the urgent need for collective action.
> "We are missing this strength to take charge of the problems that concern us. It is up to us to identify them, go to the state and say to the state, here is what we want you to do for us. Because climate change is really causing serious catastrophes."
She highlighted the dire situation faced by communities, particularly in the north, where floods have devastated local agriculture.
"You saw in the north;the mothers of the children, we don't have anything to eat this year. The animals have left with the floods. It is about our land, it is about our forests, we have to repot them, we have to do something, we need alternatives. And we absolutely have to do everything so that tomorrow will be better for all our children."
The convergence aims to build on previous successes and inspire future efforts to tackle climate change, drawing from the African tradition of the "palaver tree" to foster dialogue. The goal is to develop actionable proposals for climate adaptation and mitigation.
Furthermore, the spokesperson shared plans for a women's farm, stating:
> "We will have a women's farm that all the women of Cameroon will enrich and plant... We will come and ask the peasant women here to go and create this women's farm in Cameroon."
This second edition aims to position Cameroon at the forefront of sustainable development discussions, promoting women's eco-entrepreneurship and aligning with the policy initiatives of His Excellency Paul Biya.
