At Visit of MINSPOSTEL: CAMTEL GM Unveils Strategies to combat Vandalism of infrastructure



The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Minette Libom Li Likeng has appreciated the General Manager of CAMTEL for innovative leadership of the state corporation despite the challenging times.

The Minister was speaking in Yaounde, Friday 11th October 2024 during a visit to the state corporation .

In her opening remarks, the General Manager of CAMTEL, Judith Yah Sunday, expressed deep gratitude to the Minister and distinguished officials from MINPOSTEL, technical advisers, inspectors, and directors present for their commitment to improving the sector. She emphasized that the ministerial visit reflects the government's dedication to ensuring quality telecommunications services in Cameroon, especially following a recent visit from the Telecommunications Regulatory Board .

The General Manager acknowledged the significant challenges CAMTEL has faced in recent months, particularly concerning service quality. "We have seen a deterioration in our network, which has affected our subscribers nationwide." She stated. She reassured the audience that CAMTEL is fully aware of the expectations of Cameroonians and is taking immediate corrective measures to address these issues.

Among the pressing challenges highlighted were acts of vandalism targeting CAMTEL's infrastructure, particularly optical fiber networks. The General Manager noted a troubling increase in such incidents, which have a direct impact on service continuity and user experience. In response, CAMTEL has intensified collaboration with relevant authorities to safeguard its infrastructure and ensure that those responsible for damages are brought to justice.

 Judith Yah Sunday pointed out that power supply issues, including frequent outages, that have disrupted the stability of technical equipment, further complicating service delivery. Uncoordinated public works projects have also led to damages of critical cables, adding to the operational challenges faced by the telecommunications provider.


Despite these obstacles, CAMTEL has actively pursued several initiatives aimed at enhancing service quality. The recent handover of optical fiber infrastructure from ENEO marks a significant achievement, allowing CAMTEL to optimize connectivity across the country.

 Additionally, the company has signed an agreement with CAMWATER and is exploring potential collaborations with CAMRAIL to utilize rail corridors for deploying optical fiber, enhancing national infrastructure utilization. 

The General Manager  proudly announced that CAMTEL has achieved ISO 9001/2015 certification for its wholesale segment, underscoring the company’s commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in its operations and interactions with both national and international partners.

 This certification enables CAMTEL to offer superior services while fostering a culture of continuous improvement to meet the evolving demands of the telecommunications market.

Judith Yah Sunday  emphasized the importance of collective vigilance in preserving telecommunications infrastructure. She urged public authorities and citizens alike to recognize optical fiber as a national heritage that requires protection. "The safeguarding of our telecommunications infrastructure is a shared responsibility," she urged.


The General Manager expressed profound gratitude to the Telecommunications Regulatory Agency for its role in catalyzing progress within the sector. She assured attendees that recommendations from the ART are being implemented at CAMTEL, with tangible results expected in future presentations. Judith Yah Sunday reaffirmed CAMTEL's commitment to improving service quality and expanding its infrastructure to meet the expectations of Cameroonian citizens. She reiterated the company's dedication to implementing the recommendations aimed at enhancing electronic communications, as per the directives of the Minister which left attendees with a sense of optimism for the future of telecommunications in Cameroon. 

As CAMTEL navigates these challenges and initiatives, the visit by the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications serves as a reminder of the critical role that government support and public cooperation play in advancing the telecommunications landscape in Cameroon.
