On August 31, 2024, YouthFORCE hosted a press conference at the Bamenda II council hall to unveil their initiative aimed at combatting sexual violence and unsafe abortions among adolescent girls in Cameroon. The project seeks to provide safe abortion services for 500 victims, enhance the skills of 150 healthcare providers, and mobilize 15,000 community members over the next two years. This initiative marks a crucial step towards protecting the rights and health of women and girls in conflict-affected regions.

In a study conducted by Youth for Change and Empowerment (YouthFORCE), alarming rates of sexual violence and unsafe abortions among adolescent girls and young women in Cameroon’s North West, West, and South Regions have come to light. The research highlights the dire consequences of the ongoing conflict and displacement on these vulnerable populations, revealing a public health crisis that requires urgent attention.

The findings are particularly distressing in the North West region, where more than 60% of girls aged 13-25 have reportedly experiencied  sexual violence. Many of these young women are turning to unsafe abortion methods, placing their health and lives at significant risk. The ongoing conflict has worsened their situation, as many have been forced to flee their homes, leaving them in precarious and unsafe conditions.

Theresa Morfaw, founder of YouthFORCE, voiced her deep concern regarding the study's findings. “These girls are facing unimaginable trauma, and many are risking their lives to access unsafe abortions. We must do more to protect them and provide the necessary support,” she stated, emphasizing the critical need for immediate action from both government and international organizations.

The study outlines several key factors contributing to this crisis. The persistent conflict has severely hindered access to essential healthcare services, including safe abortion options. Additionally, the social stigma surrounding sexual violence often prevents victims from seeking the help they need, further isolating them. The lack of comprehensive sex education exacerbates these challenges, leaving many young women unaware of their rights and available resources.

In light of these findings, YouthFORCE has put forth several urgent recommendations. These include strengthening healthcare services to ensure timely medical care for survivors, implementing comprehensive sex education programs in schools and communities, and guaranteeing that legal abortion services are accessible to those in need. The organization also stresses the importance of addressing the root causes of conflict to foster a safer environment for all.
