Prof Fru Angwafo III, President of the NWRA briefing the press ahead of the 14th Ordinary Session

The 14th ordinary session of the North West Regional Assembly opens in Bamenda this Monday 16th September 2024 and will focus on evaluating the achievements from 2021 to 2024, ensuring equitable project execution with a keen eye on spatial and territorial coverage amidst the ongoing sociopolitical crisis.

The crisis has led to significant movement of populations both within and outside the North West Region, further emphasizing the importance of projects that directly benefit the people.

Speaking to the press, the President of the North West Regional Assembly, Prof Fru Angwafo III highlighted the Key Areas of Focus for the 14th Ordinary Session which will include:

1. Utilization of Social Amenities: The session will assess the functionality of schools, healthcare facilities, and other social amenities, particularly those catering to vulnerable populations affected by the crisis.

2. Balance Sheet Presentation: The Assembly will present an overview of projects undertaken in areas such as infrastructure, rehabilitation, environmental initiatives like tree planting, and social support provided across the region.

3. Plans for 2025: In addition to reviewing past projects, the Assembly will discuss the maturation of new projects developed through consultations with local communities, civil society, and peace and development committees. These projects will form the basis for budgetary allocations in the upcoming December 2024 session, setting the tone for 2025.

This September session holds particular significance as the Assembly gears up to contribute to the 2025 national budget, collaborating with key ministries, including the Ministry of Secondary Education and the Ministry of Public Health. These discussions will ensure that regional projects align with the national strategic development plan (2020–2030) and that local needs are adequately addressed.
A unique aspect of the 14th session is the inclusion of capacity-building trainings led by five invited facilitators. Topics to be covered include:
- Updates on school reopening for the 2024 academic year,
- Youth engagement in economic development,
- Health voucher schemes for better healthcare access,
- The role of NOWEDIF (North-West Development and Investment Fund),
- Climate finance initiatives, and
- Peacebuilding efforts through the Peace and Development Initiative (PDI).
