Let's Do It on a Campaign for a cleaner Douala


On Friday, September 20, 2024, Douala, Cameroon’s economic heartbeat, buzzed with enthusiasm as residents took part in World Cleanup Day. The day kicked off with a sensitization march from the Deido Roundabout to the Governor's office in the Littoral region, starting at 8 AM. Drawn together by a shared commitment to environmental sustainability, the event saw participation from students, community leaders, and environmental advocates, all eager to promote a cleaner city.

World Cleanup Day, now officially recognized by the United Nations, has become a significant global initiative aimed at mobilizing communities for environmental action. Spearheaded by the non-profit organization, Let's Do It World. This year's event marks the seventh edition in Cameroon under the theme; "Make Room for Life." This theme highlights the urgent need for cleaner, healthier environments, encouraging communities to take proactive steps toward sustainability.

"Make Room for Life" underscores the deep connection between our surroundings and our health. The initiative calls for the creation of spaces where life can flourish, unencumbered by waste. Participants in Douala engaged in a range of activities, from neighborhood cleanups to educational campaigns on waste management and eco-friendly practices. Students from Lycée JOSS played a vital role in the event, actively participating with placards that carried messages encouraging cleanliness and environmental responsibility. Their enthusiasm added an extra layer of energy to the day's activities.

Ngamnjoh Muminatu Riyuh, country leader of Let's Do It Cameroon , spoke with enthusiasm about the evolving landscape of waste management. She noted, "The commercialization of both biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste presents an opportunity for individuals to leverage this evolution and earn income, thereby making waste management more sustainable." Her insights reflect a growing awareness of the economic potential inherent in effective waste management practices.

Participants expressed their commitment to the cause as well. Dorine Mbouo, a first-time attendee of the sensitization march, shared her thoughts: "I am very happy to be part of this event. I’ve learned so much, and now I feel empowered to share waste management tips and the health hazards associated with poor waste practices with those around me."

As the day wrapped up, organizers extended their heartfelt thanks to all participants for their efforts in reducing pollution. The collaborative spirit displayed on World Cleanup Day exemplifies the power of community involvement in tackling environmental challenges. Let's Do It Cameroon continues to inspire action, reminding everyone that every small effort towards cleanliness contributes to the broader goal of sustainability and conservation.
