The building hosting the Bamenda Metropolitan Cathedral is under renovation.
Dedicated in 1975, renovation works started in the month of February 2024 and will see the total refurbishment of the church, the building of huge pillars with each carrying the statues of Jesus Christ, the virgin Mary, St Peter and other saints.
The building will also have huge giant screens behind the sanctuary.
The works as explained by the Archbishop of the Bamenda Archdiocese, His Grace Andrew Nkea will be completed in the month of April 2025, making 50 years of the dedication of the Cathedral building.
"This Cathedral was dedicated in 1975. We are just embellishing the walls and making the Cathedral look beautiful." Archbishop Nkea said.
He was pleased to announce that the renovation works this far has been done by the sons and daughters of the Bamenda Archdiocese.
"It is evident that when the people of Bamenda want to do something, they do it. These works have been supported by them with nothing coming from out of here."
To support the works of the Archbishop, the Mayor of Bamenda II, Chenwi Peter donated 100 bags of cement. Quizzed why he decided to support to the Catholic Church, Mayor Chenwi Peter remarked that;" the Archbishop has greatly contributed to the return of peace and stability in the Municipality."
"This is also the biggest assembly of God's people in this Municipality. It is important that we support the work of God. After all, if the Lord does not build, the labourers labour in vain."
Mayor Chenwi Peter went further to say that the gesture is personal and from the looks of the works, the council will have to step in to do more.
In appreciation, Archbishop Nkea thanked the Mayor and said his visit to the archdiocese is a surprise to him. He said the mayor's support will go a long way to facilitate the work.
"You know this cathedral is in Bamenda II and it's going to be a big monument for Bamenda II not only for Catholic christians but for all visitors who came into the Bamenda II Municipality. The cathedral will stand out as a landmark", he said.
Archbishop Nkea disclosed that the cathedral is expected to be completed by April 2025 to permit the christians to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the consecration of the cathedral.
