Mayor Denis Awoh Ndang of Fundong, President of UCCC North West

The President of the United Councils and Cities of Cameroon (UCCC) North West chapter, Mayor Denis Awoh Ndang has called on the powers that be to increase the number of security personnel in the red zones across the region.

He was speaking as a college of North West Mayors assembled in Yaounde to bid farewell to the late Mayor of Belo, Ngong Innocent Ankiambom.

Mayor Ndang noted that Mayors have come under increased attacks since the start of 2024 with the Deputy Mayors of Babessi and Balikumbat mercilessly murdered in cold blood then the brutal assassination of Mayor Ngong Innocent of Belo.

Since the demise of the Mayor of Belo, the Mayor of Zhoa's convoy came under heavy attack from gunmen. The Mayor of Fundong also suffered from an assassination attempt.

Mayor Ndang believes if the security personnel deployed to these areas are in their numbers, it will readily curb the presence of the separatist fighters.

"We also have to think of the military, occupying some of the villages where the activities of these fighters are also high and why not the creation of Gendarmerie brigades in these places so that the fighters will not have a free way. It is very important that the places they occupy are occupied by the regular forces." Mayor Denis Awoh Ndang said.

Multitudes converge to mourn the fallen municipal authority

He used the opportunity to remind the population that they as Mayors are only servants who want to make life better for the population and nothing else. He called on people of the region to do everything to protect those who bring development.

"This is a Mayor who did everything to bring development to his people. He will not sleep till projects are allocated to his area. The same development we have been crying about and yet he is targeted and killed. We need a rethink." Mayor Ndang said.

Quizzed if Municipal authorities should be provided with extra security to accompany them. Mayor Ndang said:

"We need the security around our municipalities. Mayor Ngong was killed in the midst of at least two security officers. So giving us bodyguards is not the issue. It is ensuring the effective presence of the military where it matters most."

Mayor Ngong Innocent Ankiambom was killed in Belo on the 20th May as he went to ensure that the National Day is effectively celebrated in Belo.

He was gunned down by separatist fighters. Mayor Ngong Innocent will be remembered as one who did everything to bring back life to 3-corners in Belo and a one championed several development projects in the Municipality.
