Several maternal deaths in Cameroon have eloped caused by unsafe abortions. Research has gone a long way to prove that about 30% of maternal deaths in Cameroon are caused by complicated abortions. Women and teenagers have both been reported of committing such acts which eventually leads to pregnancy and death.
To solve this situation Professor Dohbit Sama a member of the Cameroon Society of Gynaecologists (SOGOC) who doubles as a Gynecologist/Obstetrician has advised pregnant women to ensure strict medical follow-up during pregnancies. More over, they have been called to plan properly before getting pregnant using family planning.
"The use of modern contraceptive methods can help reduce unplanned pregnancies as it helps women to program when to become pregnant. Effective use of modern family planning methods reduce by 30% the number of women dying from pregnancy related complications.”, prof Dohbit Sama explained.
In collaboration to SOGOC coupled with the importance of Maternity Death, Sisterspeak237 through "Access to Maternal Health" has embarked on breaking all barriers caused by unsafe abortion.
According to Comfort Mussa CEO of Sisterspeak237 "Through out this national campaign, we are engaging and disemminating key messages through 10 newspapers, three tv stations, ten radio stations , bloggers and health workers".
Maternal death or maternal mortality according t9 World Health Organization (WHO) as is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy.
It is worth mentioning that according to Cameroon law abortion is accepted when the life of the mother is in danger but there is the need for women and girls to have quick access to health service, once they have health complications or discover they are pregnant.
