Minister Paul Atanga Nji in Bafut
Cameroon's Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji has commissioned the renovated office of the Divisional officer for Bafut, Tuesday 23rd February 2021
The building was burnt down by pro separatist fighters on the eve of the 2018 presidential elections
The roof, furniture, documents were all consumed by the ravaging flames, leaving the walls helpless.
Difficult to get a contractor to reconstruct the building, the Minister of Territorial Administration contracted the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) to do the work
24 months after, the office of the Divisional officer has been refurbished and the Minister notes that "it will be equipped in the days ahead"
He also congratulated the BIR for constructing two watch towers at the entrance and behind the office. He recommended that other offices like the Bafut council should emulate the example
The Divisional officer for Bafut, Diobe Elumba Didacus Elumba used the visit to explain to the Minister strides made to make Bafut habitable. From a zero school attendance last year to an improved situation this year, the Administrative officer hopes for better days
Minister Paul Atanga Nji encouraged the efforts made by the DO and Mayor but also noted that the elite of Bafut and the population should synergize with their authorities for long lasting peace to return
Bafut that has been one of the red zones in this crisis has lost almost 600 million in projects allocated to the subdivision and the credits have gone back. An amount the Mayor of Bafut, Ngwakongoh Lawrence says it's too much and need Bafut sons and daughters to unite as one for the Development of the subdivision
"Violence will not take us anywhere. Let us use this energy to develop our Municipality. We have the potentials to develop very fast. Shooting and killing will not take us there"
The collaboration between MINAT and the BIR has seen other adminstrative offices constructed and or refurbished in Bali, Wabane and two other subdivisions in the restive North West and South West Regions of Cameroon
