The Mayor of the Bamenda City council, Paul Achobong has called for an amendment to the constitution to institutionalised a National pledge
The pledge he says will help Cameroonians remember their sense of patriotism and allegiance to National institutions. To promise the nation that they will never pick up arms against the state of Cameroon
The City Mayor of Bamenda was speaking as Mayors and Members of Parliament of the North West converge for a conclave Saturday, September 5, 2020 in Bamenda
The conclave which the Mayors promised to meet at least twice a year is aimed at setting a collaborative framework between MPs and Mayors, their party hierarchy, the Administration, to jointly draft projects and also better prepare for the forthcoming Regional Elections
Chaired by Senator Mrs Regina Mundi, the conclave adopted 18 resolutions
Conspicuous amongst them was a call to Mayors to list projects that were allocated to their Municipalities and not implemented since 2016 for close follow-up within the next two weeks
The Mayors were also challenged to set up Municipal police in their various municipalities to facilitate council work
The CPDM party recorded 33 of the 34 local Councils in the North West and 18 of the 20 parliamentary seats at the February 9 Municipal and Legislative Elections and the rerun on March 22
This remarkable achievement, Regina Mundi told the local authorities must be conserved
"You should be seen as leaders who are ready to serve. Serve the General interest of the people through a sustained democratic culture" the Senator remarked
The conclave came at a time the Region in experiencing growing insecurity especially in the Regional headquarters of Bamenda that for the greater part of the week was lockdown by gunshots with a plethora of local authorities living out of their areas of command
The MPs and Mayors further resolve to appeal to the consciences of those fighting with the state, for normalcy to return
The coming together of MPs and Mayors is an initiative started by Senator Regina Mundi some two months ago and reechoed by Hon Njingum Musa, Questor at the National assembly
